When Mwiwa Borehole Drilling first came to Invitt Co, they had a real business problem: they were drilling boreholes across Harare and surrounding areas, doing genuinely good work — but virtually no one could find them online. Their digital presence was essentially zero. No Google ranking. No Google Business Profile. A domain that existed but pointed to nothing meaningful. Within 60 days, that changed completely. Here is exactly what we did.
The Situation Before We Started
Mwiwa Borehole Drilling operates in a high-intent service category. When someone in Harare needs a borehole, they are not casually browsing — they need the service urgently and they are going to Google to find a provider right now. That means showing up in Google at the right moment is directly tied to revenue. Every day they were not visible was money going to competitors.
Their challenges when we started:
- No Google Business Profile — completely absent from Google Maps results
- Website with no on-page SEO — no proper title tags, no local keywords, no structured data
- No sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- Inconsistent business name and contact details across the web
- Zero backlinks pointing to their domain
Step 1: Built a Proper, SEO-Optimised Website
The first thing we did was rebuild their website with search visibility as the primary goal — not just aesthetics. Every page was given a proper title tag targeting specific keywords like "borehole drilling Harare," "borehole installation Zimbabwe," and "borehole company near me." We structured the content with clear H1 and H2 headings, added location-specific copy, and ensured every image had descriptive alt text.
We also implemented structured data markup — specifically LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema — so Google could better understand what the business does, where it operates, and who it serves. This is a technical layer that most web designers in Zimbabwe skip entirely.
Step 2: Set Up and Optimised Google Business Profile
We created and fully optimised their Google Business Profile from scratch. This included selecting the correct primary business category, writing a keyword-rich business description that naturally mentioned Harare and surrounding areas, uploading professional photos, adding their full service list, and setting up the Q&A section proactively.
Getting the verification postcard and completing verification was the first major milestone. Within two weeks of going live, they started appearing in Google Maps results for borehole-related searches in Harare.
Step 3: Fixed Technical Issues Holding Back Rankings
During our audit, we found several technical problems that were preventing Google from properly indexing their site. Their sitemap contained URLs with hash fragments that Google cannot index. Their canonical tags were pointing to the www version of the domain while the actual site served the non-www version — a contradiction that confuses search engines and splits ranking authority.
We rebuilt the sitemap correctly, fixed the canonical tags, submitted everything to Google Search Console, and requested indexing for all key pages. These are the kinds of details that most people do not notice but that Google cares about deeply.
Step 4: Set Up Admin Tools for Long-Term Growth
We also built a media management dashboard so the Mwiwa team could manage their own content going forward — uploading site photos, adding project updates, and keeping the site fresh without needing to contact a developer for every small change. Fresh content signals to Google that a site is active, which helps maintain rankings over time.
The Results
Within 30 days of launch, Mwiwa Borehole Drilling was appearing in Google Maps results for borehole-related searches in Harare. Within 60 days, they were ranking on page one of Google Search for their primary keywords. Enquiry volume increased. The business owner confirmed they were receiving calls from new customers who had found them through Google — customers they would never have reached through word of mouth alone.
The key lesson: A great service business in Zimbabwe can compete and win on Google — but only if the digital foundation is built correctly from the start. SEO is not magic. It is methodical, technical work done consistently.
