Google Business Profile — formerly known as Google My Business — is the single most powerful free tool available to any business in Zimbabwe. It puts your business on Google Maps, shows your opening hours and contact details in search results, and lets customers leave reviews that build your credibility. If you have not set one up yet, this guide will walk you through every step.

What Is Google Business Profile and Why Does It Matter?

When someone in Harare searches "electrician near me" or "best restaurant in Borrowdale," the results that appear at the top — with a map, star ratings, and phone numbers — are Google Business Profile listings. These are separate from regular website rankings and they get clicked first. A business without a Google Business Profile is effectively invisible to a huge portion of local customers searching on their phones.

The best part: it is completely free to set up and manage.

Step 1: Go to Google Business Profile

Open your browser and go to business.google.com. Sign in with a Google account — ideally your business Gmail, not a personal one. Click "Manage now" or "Add your business."

Step 2: Enter Your Business Name

Type your exact business name as you want it to appear on Google. Do not add keywords to your business name (like "Best Plumber Harare — Joe's Plumbing") — Google will penalise this and it looks unprofessional. Just your real business name.

Step 3: Choose Your Business Category

This is one of the most important steps. Your primary category tells Google what kind of business you are — which directly affects what searches you show up for. Choose the most specific category that matches what you do. If you are a web design agency in Harare, select "Web designer" or "Internet marketing service." You can add secondary categories later.

Step 4: Add Your Location

If customers visit your premises, add your physical address. If you operate a service-area business (you go to clients rather than them coming to you), you can instead specify the areas you serve — for example, Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo. Do not add a fake address — Google verifies these and fake addresses get suspended.

Step 5: Add Your Contact Details

Enter your business phone number and website URL. Make sure the phone number is active and answered professionally — customers will call directly from your Google listing. Your website URL should go to your main homepage.

Important: Make sure your phone number and address match exactly what is on your website. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your local ranking — this is called NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone).

Step 6: Verify Your Business

Google needs to confirm that your business is real and that you own it. In Zimbabwe, the most common verification method is a postcard mailed to your business address with a 5-digit verification code. This can take 5–14 days. Some businesses qualify for phone or email verification — you will be shown the available options after completing your listing.

While waiting for verification, you can still fill in all your profile details — it is worth doing this fully before going live.

Step 7: Complete Your Profile Fully

A complete profile ranks higher than an incomplete one. Make sure you have added:

Step 8: Start Getting Reviews

Reviews are the single biggest factor in how well your Google Business Profile ranks in local searches. After verification, ask your existing customers to leave you an honest Google review. Send them the direct link — you can find it in your Google Business Profile dashboard under "Get more reviews." Even 5–10 genuine reviews will push you significantly above competitors with none.
